Bareback

Diablo was in my hotel room yesterday, thumbing through my blog, when she found out that I initially write my blog into Word then copy and paste it into the website. She frowned and explained that real blogging is done directly into the website... "Go Bareback!" she exclaimed as she gave me a look like as though she just caught me polishing a silver tea set. So here I am... going bareback... writing directly into the body of the blog without protection.

Yesterday morning, I watched live on the IFC website as they announced the independent spirit nominations. Juno got four! I can't tell you how cool that was. Seeing so many people honored from the film. Last year, I couldn't make it to the award show when I won for Smoking, because I was in Vancouver shooting Juno. This year, I plan on attending.

Then, last night Ellen won the award for best breakthrough performance at the Gotham awards. It was such a cool night. Ran into everybody from Mary Harron (one of my favorite directors) to Laura Linney to a girl I went to high school with. Ellen was so good up on stage. She is a rock star.

Highlight of last night was seeing Roger Ebert. He got the lifetime achievement award and was given a standing ovation. I ran into him afterwards and he pulled out his pad/pen to write me a note: My interview with him is being published in this Sunday's paper! I'm buying a hundred copies.

I'm off to tape ABC's Popcorn with Peter Travers. I know this is crazy, but I always pictured Travers with long hair... something about the Rolling Stones thing. I just pictured him one very specific way. Then, I met him last night and he had short hair and a mustache. I don't know why, but this took me totally off guard.

Congrats Jason

Congratulations on the nominations for Juno. Wow, 4 noms. I have watched Juno a few times now and enjoy it in a way that I have not enjoyed films, at least in this genre. I met your dad at the TIFF the year Thank You For Smoking came out. Not suprisingly a very nice guy who happens to be a film making legend. I have been a fan of his films for some time now and frankly, his talent has obviously been passed on to you.

I notice the little nods to your dad's movies in yours. Like, Juno getting food at the school cafeteria the way John Belushi filled his food tray in Animal House. It must be a great feeling to have an in to the entertainment industry, prove yourself as a film making talent and then go on to be nominated best director. There is no doubt that casting and a great script contributed to Juno's success but really, this is a smart and perceptively well directed film.

Of all the critics in the film business, Roger Ebert has always been the most accurate in detailing what makes a great film. Well, he chose your's as best film of the year, as you know and that sais something. $85M and counting, Juno will likely break the $100M before it's deterimined whether there will be an Oscar telecast.

Aside from being a big film fan, I also am into voice characterizations and have considered doing voice overs.

I hope for your sake and the whole production team and cast of Juno that you get to have your night at the Oscars. What an achievement Jason, very well done. I'm sure there must be lots more where Juno came from.

I would love to see a real telling of The Catskills. I visited many of the hotels back in the 70's as a kid. There you go, a film about the Catskills from the performer, staff and visitors viewpoint.

The Concord, Homowack, The Raleigh, Kutchers, Nevele, Browns etc.. they all had performers that were as hungry for success as you would see at any comedy club. The Catskills was all about comedy; the circuit. There is a great script there somewhere, it has to be written, no?

If you ever went to the Catskills with your family you would know what I mean. Maybe you do anyway.. these were real grinders slowly working a path to whatever stardom they did or didn't achieve. Reality with a comical undertone, that seems to be your specialty.

Anyway, best of luck at the Oscars Jason.

This film was amazing!

I just came home from a screening of Juno at the Magnolia in Dallas, TX. It was such a fantastic movie. And what topped it off was getting to meet YOU afterward! (I was the slightly nervous guy who is the big Jennifer Garner fan...) My friends and I went out afterward and could NOT stop talking about the movie. I didn't expect to laugh so much, but it really was a comedic gem of a film. You managed to bring out so many nuances of the script, funny, touching, even mildly uncomfortable in a couple of scenes without out going too far into unpleasant waters. Brilliantly acted, acerbically written, skillfully directed, charmingly entertaining! Loved it and can't wait to see it again! Thanks for spending time with the audience after the film...it really was the icing on the cake!

bloggers

I went to a Bloggers' private screening in London last night - about 60/70 Bloggers and videobloggers and twitterers and all sorts of geeks.
Everyone was raving about it.
I thought it was absolutely amazing. Script, performances, it was full of surprises, perfectly paced, gripping, touching, and hilarious.
The best film I've seen in a really long time.
And at the party afterwards, we all had a lot of similar experiences to yours with Peter Travers. Bloggers who suddenly had faces and voices. Weird. I'm a video blogger. So people knew what I looked like. But they obviously all secretly thought I was much shorter than they'd expected...
Well done. Really. And thanks.

JUNO is amazing!!!

I just went to the JUNO premiere today. I had the time of my life. I am a college student at UCLA and I work/intern 5 days a week for a PR firm that works for Fox Searchlight. This was my first premiere. I was so lucky to start out with such an amazing film! JUNO is truly my FAVORITE movie! I have my Dancing Elk t-shirt and movie posters. I can't say enough how much i love this film. From the directing to the cinematography, to the SOUNDTRACK (amazing!) and the acting (also amazing!). I look forward to see how well JUNO does this year during awards season (because it will!) You are so awesome! YAY JUNO!

Congrats!

Hello Jason, I just wanted to say I've already seen Juno three times and I absolutely love it. You all did an amazing job. Congratulations on the Spirit Awards and best of luck to you.
